Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Latin America

Recent detections of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Latin America represent a significant concern for backyard and commercial poultry production in the region. The outbreaks, likely due to bird migrations from North America to South America, have impacted both waterfowl, backyard, and, more recently, commercial poultry in the region.

I had the opportunity this week to provide a consultation with the Ecuadorian government to discuss depopulation and carcass disposal. They have an excellent team focused on the HPAI response and I am confident that they will do an excellent job. However, the challenge will be great for Ecuador and neighboring countries. I am grateful to the Pan American Health Organization for facilitating this consultation!

Best of luck to my Latin American colleagues and friends! As always, do not overlook the importance of biosecurity!
